| SERVICE LEARNING |
 |
Service learning is an educational movement in the United States that emphasizes the dual activities of providing meaningful service to the community with learning about subject matter. At Farm in the City, we work with service learning students from colleges and universities all over the Twin Cities to create service opportunities for them which will translate into learning within their disciplines. Examples of previous service learning projects include:
- creating brochures and producing a newsletter for Farm in the City
- updating a community garden resource guide
- assisting art teachers with studio art projects
- assisting the program manager with running the youth program
- helping to design the summer program for Japanese middle and high school youth
- carrying out a community design process for a new community garden
Each post-secondary institution has its own requirements for service learning. As a community site, Farm in the City participates by creating work opportunities, supervising the college students, helping the students to reflect on their work in terms of both service and learning aspects, and community with college faculty regarding the overall experience.
Farm in the City invites college students in all fields to contact us to work out service learning opportunities.
